The meaning of flower bed mulching is to apply some organic or inorganic substances to the soil for a variety of functionalities such as the moisture retaining and drainage improvement. Mulching frequently will keep the moisture and warmth of the soil in bad weathers and help improve the drainage conditions and the air circulation. Moreover, it helps plants to resist the expansion of the weed.

There a number of substances can be used as the candidates to apply mulches. They can be categorized into two groups: organic ones and inorganic ones. The examples of organic mulches a barks and wood chips, and they will gradually decompose after a certain period. Among all the barks, some old-aged barks are preferred to others because they already half decomposed which can provide extra nutrients for the soil. Some other barks or chips are also good options if the soil is rich in nutrients. Some barks are artificially dyed in colors to provide a good look with the flowers in your garden. You should match your mulches with your plants before applying them to the field. The size of the mulching materials is another factor to think about. Compared with big-sized barks, finer one is easily spread by wind or bad weathers.

After you bought your favorite bagged mulches from the gardening store, it is time to apply them to your flower beds. To provide a better protection for your plants, the height of the mulch layer should be no less than 5 inches. This thickness can effectively keep the soil cool in summer and warm in winter days. Also, weed growth can be greatly depressed as well. Since the bottom layer of the mulch will decompose quickly, you need to apply some extra ones on the top to make compensation. Different type of soil need different amount of mulches to keep water. Usually sandy soil needs more mulches than other soil types. The summer is the time when weeds germinate quickly. So, you should make your mulch ready before the warm season starts. For each year, you need to do the applying job again to compensate the decomposed underlying layer.
